UK Prime Minister Theresa May Announced The Government’s to hold a snap general election on 8th June 2017
The facts are out there and Theresa May said she would not hold an election til 2020, but she has gone & done it & a snap general election is on the 8th June 2017.
It is understandable why she would seek to hold a general election now, as polls show the Conservative Party holding a significant lead over Labour, the Liberal Democrats & the Scottish National Party.
Conservatives holding 330 seats, Labour 220, SNP 54, Liberal Democrats holding 9 and other 26* (inc 4 Sinn Fein)
The Guardian newspaper Anne Perkins believes Theresa May is likely to win a “thumping majority”; but she claims this will leave Mrs May with “no obligation on her to reflect the views of the minority position”.
It’s hard to tell from Britain-wide polls how parties are performing in Scotland and Wales in any detail. But it’s clear that the SNP continue to dominate while Labour have fallen back further. That’s also supported by the handful of Scotland-only polls.
Justifying her the decision, Mrs May stated: “The country is coming together but Westminster is not.”
Mrs May also spoke of a “Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit, and it will cause damaging uncertainty and instability to the country”.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn welcomed Theresa May’s calls for an early election. He commenting saying that it will “give the British people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first.”
Mrs May spoke to the Queen on Easter Monday to let her know of the election plan, the Prime Minister’s spokesman said. She also got the full backing of the Cabinet before calling the election.
Unpredictable Outlook Investments
From a financial outlook the pound rose sharply in reaction to the news. After a early dip, the pound was as much as 1.6% higher in afternoon trade; at a five-month high of $1.2766. But in the short term the announcement sterling made a recovery, reaching £1.26 at the time of writing. This suggests that markets are relaxed with the idea of an election, but is also perhaps an indication of relief that there won’t be further instability at the top of the ruling Conservative party rather than an endorsement of the idea of an election itself. In the long term Politics can have an unpredictable outlook investments.
